The Tulip Stool is widely considered to be a modern classic, like many of the other products created by the late Finnish American architect and industrial designer Eero Saarinen. Eero said that the purpose of the chair's design was to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. Home.” Indeed, the chair's appearance does just that, as the Tulip Stool does not have multiple legs. Rather, it is held up by a single support, which is made out of cast aluminum.
The shape of the base is said to have been inspired by the look of a drop of viscous liquid. It is slender and stalk-like at the centre, widening into a large, circular shape at the very bottom - aside from looking pretty, this also allows the stool to stand up just as well as if it had four legs.
The Tulip Stool's platinum enamel features a clear satin finish, and its black and white frames possess bonded finishes that stay glossy even after years of use.
As its name implies, the Tulip Stool also has a vaguely flower-like shape. The wide, circular seat of the chair “blooms” from the top of the aluminum base, with a thick cushion for added comfort.
